Revenue Cycle Coding Strategies (RCCS) director of Oncology eConsulting, Trena Taylor, started her journey on the clinical side as a radiation therapist in 1999. Since then, Trena has truly done it all. As time went on, Trena has embraced many different roles in the industry, but one thing has always shown through – her passion for her patients.
After remaining on the clinical side for almost 10 years, Trena now works with an Oncology Client Services team, focusing on taking care of eConsulting clients to ensure their experience at RCCS is complete. There she onboards new clients and assists with various projects for ongoing clients. In addition to working directly with her clients, Trena also assists with the traveling and auditing side of Oncology Client Services on various assessments and projects.
Trena first joined the RCCS team in 2012. She says two things she has really come to love at her time there is her work and her very experienced team. In her work, Trena says she particularly enjoys working with new clients to ensure they have comprehensive and accurate documentation and charge review processes.
“The Oncology Client Services team at RCCS is top-notch,” she explains. “The team works well together and the goal of taking care of our clients is a priority.”
When she started at RCCS, Trena began with a client, reviewing documentation and charges every day. From there, she quickly worked her way up the ladder. Trena is always trying to learn new things. Over time, she has become a jack-of-all-trades within the department, from managing client caseloads to managing the team to now managing the department service line itself.
“I am learning new stuff all the time,” Trena says. “You have to so you have to learn new stuff to stay fresh.”
Trena says she especially enjoys interacting with and onboarding new clients in her current role. Through this, she is now able to set up new clients and send them down their paths to success. However, it is not just about sending down that path for Trena. Every individual client is very important to her. Trena says she also loves the interactions she has with those clients and staying involved with them even after she has given them to someone else to take care of to make sure their path to success is well-paved.
“Now I get to onboard clients and then I kind of hand them off to someone else to take care of,” she explains. “But I'm still part of the journey, so I like staying involved in the clients that I do start.
Trena says she believes her team is unique and is bettering the industry because they are not only reviewing documentation and charges, but they all have experience on the clinical side of what they are reviewing. Their unique blend of clinical expertise is what sets them apart from others in the industry, she explains. Trena says the combined clinical expertise, coding knowledge, and compliance are very beneficial to the patient.
Additionally, Trena emphasizes the importance of maintaining the integrity of the business side of the oncology industry. For her and her team, ensuring coding and billing standards adhere to compliance and honesty is not just a task – it's a commitment to the patient's well-being.
“I think that has been my number one goal,” she says. “To do it, make it accurate, compliant, and in the end to benefit the patient.”
When she is not working with her team and patients, there are some other passions Trena has found. Outside the dynamic realm of RCCS, Trena has discovered a newfound passion for golf, which began during the past couple of summer seasons.
Expressing her love for the sport and the outdoors, she jests about the potential danger if she were to live somewhere warm, jokingly stating, “If I could do it a lot more often than I think I would. If I lived somewhere warm then it would be dangerous.”
Currently, Trena resides in Indiana where she cherishes the moments spent with family and friends. She is a lover of the outdoors and values the time she can spend with her children. As her kids are approaching adulthood, she values every opportunity to connect with them, recognizing the significance of these moments in their growing independence.
