Katie Sipes, the Manager of Oncology eConsulting at RCCS, brings nearly two decades of experience in the oncology field. Her journey into healthcare began early, inspired by her mother, a nurse, and her desire to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients. “I knew I didn’t want to be a nurse, but I wanted to do something in healthcare where I could make an impact,” Katie recalls. After graduating from radiation therapy school, she quickly found herself working as a staff therapist before moving into leadership roles.
Katie’s path to RCCS came through her work at a cancer center where her team collaborated with RCCS on charge review processes, and she met Tamara Syverson. This experience with RCCS’s meticulous approach to charge capture and compliance set the foundation for her eventual move to the company. “Having that early exposure helped me understand the value of deeper education and feedback—not just capturing charges from a cheat sheet,” Katie explains.
In her role at RCCS, Katie initially focused on charge review and consulting, working with clients to ensure compliance and documentation accuracy. As the company grew, so did Katie’s responsibilities. Now, as a manager, she oversees a team of consultants while balancing client relationships and providing quality assurance for the team’s work. “I support my staff by answering questions and helping them navigate complex client needs,” she says. Katie also steps in for PRN charge capture when needed, offering temporary vacancy fills for clients. “It’s interesting to be back in a management role, but this setting is very different from clinical management,” she adds.
Katie values the work-life balance and flexibility that RCCS offers, especially as a mother. “The ability to flex my schedule to fit my family’s needs and still get all my work done has been invaluable,” she shares. But what keeps Katie the most engaged is the constant learning. “Every year brings new rules for charge capture, and there’s always something to research, whether it’s understanding how different EMRs work or delving into claims and denials. I like that no two days are the same.”
Katie is also passionate about the educational aspect of her work. “Every client presents an opportunity to educate—whether it’s about the services they’re providing or ensuring they’re billing correctly. It’s not just about compliance; it’s about helping hospitals and physicians get reimbursed properly, while making sure patients aren’t burdened with unnecessary bills,” she emphasizes. Katie is a member of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), and recently contributed to an article that will be published in their Radiation Therapist journal later this fall.
Outside of work, Katie enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, going camping and hiking. She’s also an avid reader and a regular at her children’s soccer, baseball, and basketball games. “We stay busy with sports, but I wouldn’t have it any other way,” she says.
Katie Sipes’s dedication to continuous learning, client support, and patient care makes her an invaluable member of the RCCS team. Her leadership and expertise help ensure that both her team and the clients they serve are well-supported, compliant, and successful.
